On the occasion of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) 150th anniversary, Marty was amongst a very select group of awardees invited to accept an ITU50 award in Geneva, Switzerland. The awards recognize individuals that have contributed to improving the lives of world citizens through ICT innovations developed, promoted or implemented by ITU. Fellow ITU50 awardees included Bill Gates, Robert E. Kahn, Thomas Wiegand, Mark I. Krivocheev and Ken Sakamura.
Marty was honored to have been selected as one of the 2014-2015 Professional Gordon Engineering Leadership Awardees by the Gordon Engineering Leadership Center. The Center’s purpose is to reward and recognize successful engineering leaders and to promote positive role models for the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD. Congratulations to Marty and to all the other 2014-2015 award winners!
The Swedish Education Broadcasting company interviewed Marty for their TV documentary about the mobile phone revolution. This in-depth look into the history of the mobile phone included exploration of mobile banking, citizen journalism, texting while driving and input from key people and companies that helped make our planet wireless. Listen in on how mobile technology has become a “tool for all people”; changing us, our behavior and our planet — forever!
Marty teamed up with Ireland’s Department of Education for the two-day “EXCITED, a Digital Learning Festival” in Dublin Castle. The Festival covered everything new and innovative, in education, in the digital world, Marty had much to say in his headline speech about the use of technology in education; including the idea that “Education must be tailored to the individual.” Read more of Marty’s views on the future of education in Ireland’s independent.ie.
Seeing a write-a-book about Marty in a school hallway in Ireland sparked an idea for Ciaran Cannon, Minister for Training and Skills at Ireland’s Department of Education. Soon, Cannon was going to see Marty who was scheduled to speak at EXCITED – a Digital Learning Festival in Dublin. He predicted Marty would be pleased with the book, but Marty was so taken by it, he and his business partner and spouse, Arlene Harris, welcomed an impromptu visit to the Kiltiernan National School Co. in Galway, Ireland to meet the young author, Aine O’Rourke, and her classmates.
